Grenadines Spot Guide

General wind season in the Grenadines is from November until August, best time to go there is between December and June.

Union Island

kite level: beginner, intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: East

The lagoon of Clifton Village on Union Island is ultra flat with best conditions for freestyle kitesurfing. You can find flat, shallow water inside the reef, which makes the spot suitable for beginners. On the reef there is a nice left hand breaking wave.
Take care of ships, reefs and other kitesurfer as this is the most busiest spot in the Grenadines where you can find about 5-10 other people on the water.
The spot is located just south of the airport so you can either get there by car or boat. Launch your kite from the small and sandy beach. Kiting in front of the runway is forbidden.

Take a few tacks upwind to east and out of the lagoon to end up in the waves on the reef of Palm Island.

Frigate Island

kite level: beginner, intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: ENE, East, ESE

Just a short downwinder away from Union Island you can find ultra flat offshore conditions on Frigate Island. This is a great remote spot both suitable for beginners and freestylers. It can get a bit choppy when the tide is high tho.
Frigate Island in the south of Union Island is only accessible by kite or boat. Launch your kite either directly from the boat or on the very small beach. Watch out for reefs, corals and rocks.

Mayreau - Saltwhistle Bay

kite level: beginner, intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: East

One of the best flat freestyles spots in this area with shallow water is located at the north end of Mayreau Island. If there are only few boats in the anchorage you can kite in the protected bay facing west for very flat water. Small waves are on the east facing lagoon of the bay which is surrounded by a reef. Be careful at low tide and watch out for ships and corals.
The sandy beaches are big enough to launch your kite from. Be careful on the west facing beach which is a bit narrow.
The Island is only accessible by boat.

Canouan - windward lagoon

kite level: intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: East, ESE, SE

Inside the deserted turquoise lagoon located at the eastern side of this Island you can find crystal clear flat water perfectly made for both intermediate and advanced kitesurfers. Depending on the tide the water can be a bit choppy.
You can launch your kite on the big beach in front of the hotel but respect the hotel people. You might as well just walk to one of the other small beaches along the lagoon to launch your kite from.
Outside the lagoon on the shallow outer reef you can find small to medium size waves.
Watch out for rocks, reefs, corals and currents.

This is also a great starting point for a downwinder to Saltwhistle Bay on Mayreau Island in the south west.

Petit Tabac

kite level: beginner, intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: East

You can find flat/choppy conditions inside the lagoon of Petit Tabac, a small uninhabited island only accessible by boat. Look out for exposed reef and corals within the shallow lagoon, outside the reef you can find nice waves.

Tobago Cays

kite level: Intermediate, advanced
best wind direction: East

The marine park made up by 4 islands is home to hundreds of sea turtles and rays which contribute to the most breathtaking scenery. The water within the big reef is flat and sometimes a bit choppy. At the end of the reef you can find a great left hand breaking wave. Watch out for reefs, corals and ships.
The marine park is only reachable by boat. Launch your kite on one of the islands small sandy beaches. As this is a marine park it is not suitable for complete beginners, you should be able to have your kite under control all the time. DonĀ“t kite inside the floating line of buoys in front of Baradal Island and keep enough distance to boats.

You can also start a downwinder to Mayreau Island in the west.
